The Future of Wastewater Treatment Series: Sacramento, CA

This article is part of our feature on the future of wastewater in the U.S.’s fastest growing metro areas. We’re using the Transcend Design Generator to automatically build, expand, or upgrade regional wastewater treatment systems in each of these regions.

Sacramento County, ranking #27 among the fastest-growing U.S. counties, has experienced a significant surge in its population, now reaching approximately 1.7 million. To meet the increased wastewater demands of the growing population, there is a need to extend our existing wastewater treatment capacities.

The current Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant (SRWTP), based in Elk Grove, was built in the 1970s and became fully operational in 1982. It was designed to centralize wastewater treatment, replacing the 22 separate treatment plants that previously existed in the Sacramento Area. The SRWTP, now serving over 1.4 million people across Elk Grove, Sacramento, Citrus Heights, Folsom, and Rancho Cordova, treats approximately 127 million gallons of effluent daily.

However, to cater to the growing population, we estimate that the treatment capacity needs to be increased to about 154 MGD. This represents an additional capacity of 27 MGD.

To address this need, Transcend Design Generator (TDG) is planning the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant, using the same technologies currently employed at the SRWTP. This new plant will include primary clarifiers, conventional activated sludge (CAS) treatment, and chlorine disinfection.

By using the capabilities of TDG, we aim to deliver an effective and efficient wastewater treatment solution that will keep pace with Sacramento County’s continuous growth and evolving needs.
