Transcend has an opening for a Senior Substation Designer

What you’ll be doing

Transcend is a technology company focused on accelerating the design and deployment of innovative and sustainable critical infrastructure. In this position you will be leveraging CAD and Modeling skills to aid in the development of design automation software. At Transcend we believe that software is only as powerful as the people that inspire it. In this role you will be responsible for developing and enforcing the technical basis for a generative design engine developed to automate the application of physical first principles, engineering best practices and regulator requirements to the civil and structural design of substations and other critical energy infrastructure.

Detailed tasks relating to the position:

• Build and manage a library of BIM objects and object families
• Develop BIM objects in support of automated, Revit 3D modeling
• Modify and adapt existing client-provided models as required
• Develop and modify CAD drawings of energy infrastructure assets including:
  • Substations
    • Site Plan Drawings
    • Elevation drawings
    • General Arrangement Diagrams
    • Steel Plans
    • Foundation Plans
  • Interpretation of Electrical Design inputs to make civil arrangement decisions
  • Apply standard design principles and theories to complete assignments including the use of applicable standards and codes such as ANSI, PFI, and ASME.

Who you’ll be doing it with

Joining the Energy team at Transcend you will be among the team members responsible for bringing Transcend’s 10-year-old software product to the energy sector. You will work directly with internal software developers, engineers, and our clients to develop the core building blocks, BIM objects and CAD assets need to accommodate generative substation design.

Where you’ll be doing it

This position is a remote position with flexibility to work from anywhere in North America or Europe. Similarly, the people you will be working with are from all over North America and Europe. Applicants should have a willingness to travel for major company functions, conferences, and client meetings as well as be flexible in working on a diverse team across several time zones.

What we think you’ll need to be successful

Experience with the civil and structural design of substations will be critical to acting independently in the development of widely applicable civil/structural design assets in Revit and AutoCAD or similar. Applicants shall have had experience working on no less than 10 substation projects in the last 2 years. Desired Experience:

• Extensive 3D modeling experience supporting Substation or other power system design
  • Experience developing BIM objects in Revit, Inventor or similar
  • experience combining multiple BIM objects into 3D models representative of complex engineered facilities
  • Experience developing and managing complex libraries of BIM objects including importation and exportation of objects developed in different applications
• Experience authoring and reviewing engineering project documentation including the use of CAD software (AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, Microstation or similar)
  • orthographic (2D) drawings
  • isometric (3D) designs
  • supplier/manufacturer drawings.
  • 3D Models
• The ability to develop and effectively maintain high quality engineering documentation and will be critical to daily activities in this role. Applicants should have high standards for documentation and technical rigor.
  • Ability to develop and maintain complex file systems for easy information location and maintenance
• Familiarity with BIM Standards, CAD standards, and general engineering design standards

Necessary for filling in the position

• 3+ years of relevant design experience accommodating power infrastructure
• Experience with engineering 3D design software, with a focus on BIM (Revit, Inventor or Similar)
• Experience 2D CAD software such as AutoCAD or MicroStation

This position will not include

• Field support, troubleshooting, or maintenance of power systems – While occasional visits of key clients at the location of exceptionally important critical assets may be required, regular site visits will not be required. Support during construction and or operation for assets developed by our team or using our tools will not be required
